I am a full-time artist and educator based in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, where I teach and create work that reflects both personal identity and place. I began painting at a young age and knew early on that art was not just a passion but a path to pursue professionally. After earning my BFA and MFA in Fine Arts, I’ve continued to explore abstraction through landscapes and animal portraiture.
I use a range of mediums: acrylic, oil, watercolor but every piece includes sumi ink, a deliberate choice to honor my Japanese heritage. Whenever I reach for dark tones, I replace black paint with sumi ink (calligraphy ink), weaving cultural memory into the surface of the painting. This practice is both personal and ancestral and how I bring identity into the material.
Living in Hawaiʻi deeply shapes my work. My abstract landscapes often hold an emotional sense of place rather than a literal one, reflecting the layered histories and multicultural realities of the islands.
Animals hold a special role in my work. The portraits are created for those whose animals are not just pets; they are ʻohana. I approach these paintings as acts of honoring pilina and aloha, capturing not only the physical but the presence and personality that make each animal irreplaceable.
